Hey Ladies and maybe some Gents?
I'm taking a writing class this semester where we focus on writing on topics relating to our field of study. My blog is about being a female percussionist and the issues that we are faced with on a regular basis. I would love to get some insight from others like myself. Please check out my blog athttp://turningthebeataround.blogspot.com
Let me know what you think!

DRUM! Traps Travis' Fly Kit
If you like interesting drum sets, then read on to learn about how Travis Barker's new kit flies.
SAN JOSE, Calif., -- Travis Barker is receiving rave reviews for his new “fly” drum kit, which MTV described in a July 29 report as “gravity-defying and head-spinning.”
DRUM! Magazine, one of Enter Music Publishing's hip, drum/percussion magazines, however, had the scoop when DRUM! contributing photographer, Robert Downs, was invited to the Forum in Los Angeles on July…

I'm about to record 6 songs with one of my bands, The Unplay!
This is a very peculiar band, we made portuguese versions for big hits like "Take Me Out" (Franz Ferdinand), Song 2 (Blur) and "What Do You Want From Me" (Monaco)... We' re self-intituled " the worst band in the world"!
This is really exciting, can't wait!

Does anyone know how to get a really good bass drum sound? I have an old Slingerland set and am told it is really good quality. I think it's the heads that need replaced. Or maybe they weren't done right b/c they're fairly new. I probablly need a tuning lesson, too. :0
I just want to be able to hear myself better. (the bass drum, that is).

Ok:
I don't want anyone involved in this community to think that myself or DRUM! Magazine is an agent of publicity for Neil Peart. However, his drumming continues to impact musicians of all ages and walks of life. Enough said. As you'll notice, there's a section of this release that discusses other interesting winners, Sheila E, for instance, who has not won in quite some time. I think that I've made it clear in other posts that I will not stand for racism or sexism in my life or music. So, sin…

Music and drums in their purest form in an ideal world would be above the challenges of sexism and racism. Unfortunately, that's not the case. For me, I don't accept sexism and racism at all and don't tolerate in them in my life.
I just wanted to make that clear in this site because I really respect female drummers, such as Evelyn Glennie, Cindy Blackman, etc.
Now, below is a tribute video announcement regarding a presentation that I did on behalf of one of the finest guitar players in the wor…

Since my band is just starting to play out, I thought I'd get some feedback on how many songs make up the usual gig. Obviously, there are all sorts of places to play out - festivals, bars, parties, "on the patio" at stores. For those of you in bands, how long do you usually play in a set? 30 minutes? 45 minutes? How often and how long do you take a break? How many songs do you usually play for a gig and do you ever repeat some from earlier in the night? How many songs would you say your band has…

Hello to my new pals here at DrummerGirl. I hope you don't mind a pianist/author jumping onto this site, but it seems to me that you are the perfect audience for this quirky novel I've written, about, well, a girl drummer. Just to give you an idea of what I'm up to, I'm posting the prologue and first chapter of the book here.
Best wishes from Cologne, Germany!

I've been trying to get the hang of the shuffle in my recent drum lesson and my instructor was very helpful and I thought, "ok. I got it." But when I went home and tried to apply it to the song I was playing, I don't "got it". I ended up having to go to quarter notes and let the bass player inject the shuffle sound. Any tips any of you have would be great, including some possible songs to start working with that I can try those tips out on. Old or new music, I don't care. I just really love the…

i just went for an audition for school talent show. When the teacher saw my video she said that she is going to make me play on the floor infront of the croud. I know its better to play there than not at all. But there is a hudge stage and she wants me to play on the floor! My plan was tp come out with my school drum play a little somthing then all of a sudden have the curtains open I would throw that pair of sticks and run back there and start playing my trap set. But no I have to play on the f…

Check out You Tube and look for Runaway Blues & Classics Band - we now have 2 postings. I'm very thrilled with the talented folks in my band and wanted to share with all of you. My drumming is still a little basic - this is the first band I've ever played with (practically the first people I've ever played with) and although I can hear all my mistakes, I feel like I'm improving. We went to a local recording studio to get the Runaway take - can't beat it for $10 apiece for 4 hours - you can s…

Our lead guitar posted one of our recordings from last week on you tube. No px of the band, but I think these guys sound awesome. Nothing fancy at all on the drums, I just kept the beat but it really shows off Johnny's lead. I'm a little biased, but I think the guys in my band are really talented. We're blues and classics. I don't know how to attach the web details, but if you go to you tube and look for "Sleepwalk" by the band Runaway, that's us. He downloaded a nice picture show, too. Hope you…
