Hi Lajeanette-Thanks for offering to watch my videos. I know I need lots of work. Can you make some suggestions? I don't take lessons, so whatever I can work on, I'd like to. Also, could you make some suggestions of how I might work on doing some "fancier" fills? Do you use a lot of rudiments for fills? Do you speak French? I speak very little. It's very poor.-Jessica G.

Hi Lajeanette-Thanks for the friend invite, and for your very helpful comments on my videos. I've learned that I need to practice much more with a metronome. I could tell, after I watched the film of the New Orleans groove, that I was losing time. With "Fool in the Rain", I was very tense and it showed. I had just learned it. Usually, I take things slowly, but I tried to speed up too soon. The most challenging thing for me is the technique. Thanks for your input.-Jessica G.

Lajeanette-Yes, I do use a metronome, but I plan to use it much more. I used it today a lot more during my practice.-Jessica G.

Lajeanette-I agree! I actually stopped using the metronome for a while, and beforehand, I wasn't really using it much at all, only when I did my rudiments or stickwork, not the exercises. I was afraid I might start to need it too much. Now, I intend to use it during more than this! I don't hate it though, I actually have fun improvising with it-I know, I'm crazy! It gives a sense of security. I hope to see some of your videos when you can post them.-Jessica G.

Lajeanette,
I read your response to Jessica where you said "'never stop drumming". I'm finally getting that into my head. I used to play until I made a mistake and then stop and start over again. It didn't accomplish what I wanted it to. At my level, I have to expect there will be mistakes and just hope that the rest of my playing will be worth listening to. I also liked your suggestion for your students to play with their eyes closed or in the dark. I have not tried that yet, but it sounds like a good idea. My instructor is telling me now to pay attention to moving with the music and not just hitting the drums - (more)

(continued) His phrase was "make love to the drums" which just made me laugh, but I know that he means "don't play drums like you were typing, show how you are getting into the music". All these things to remember!!!
Welcome to the site. I can see that you have a lot to say. We welcome your input.
