Yoga is the best form of fitness I have ever encountered. I used to have terrible back pain and 2 months into yoga it all went away. Specifically flow yoga and bikram yoga are the two I would recommend. Yoga keeps you flexible, supple, thin, and s...
Shoni, what size is the drum? What kind of condition is it in, i.e. the shell, bearing edges, tension lugs, that sort of thing? Is it a vintage Slingerland?
Alex has good advice. Besides Youtube, here is an online resource that can provide a lot o...
You can look on youtube for various tuning methods. If you get new heads, make sure you "seat" them properly. Getting a really good sound depends on your own style and tastes. Different people like different things. The best way is to experiment. ...
Does anyone know how to get a really good bass drum sound? I have an old Slingerland set and am told it is really good quality. I think it's the heads that need replaced. Or maybe they weren't done right b/c they're fairly new. I probablly need a ...
Hi Shoni! Good question. I know I need tuning lessons myself, but I'm thinking that a lot of factors can affect the bass drum sound. If you have an 18" diameter bass, it's size could affect the sound, but you could compensate for that by the type of head and the type of muffling that's used. Maybe, in order to get it louder, take out any pillows or blankets that are inside, and get a head that has outside muffling built into it, or use something on the head itself to just muffle it slightly. If it's tuned too tightly, it might not be resonating enough. If you keep the batter side and the front head loose, maybe that would help. I've been looking at beaters lately. Maybe a wooden beater, something really hard, could amp up the volume a little. Your set sounds like it would be great to play on. Speed King pedals are classic! I just threw ideas out-not sure if they'd work, but I hope one of them helps! Take Care!-Jessica G.

Hi Shoni! I read your discussion on rudiments. Like you, I'm pretty much self-taught, and it's only until recently that I've come to appreciate the need to practice rudiments. What I've heard from other drummers, and kind of discovered myself, was that they help speed and agility, but also, they make a fantastic basis for drum beats and fills. I've noticed that those who have really focused a good part of their practice on rudiments come away with real speed and agility, and coupled with the groove, it makes for awesome drumming. I'm not yet there myself, and like you, I have trouble focusing sometimes, but I found that it does help, as does practicing anything. On a pad or set, I'm not sure it really matters. It's cool to do them on your kit, so that you can create beats and fills as you practice. Sorry for the long response. Good luck to you.-Jessica G.

How long have you been drumming?
18 months
What is your drumming history:
I tried to play in an all girl cover band when I first got my kit. It never materialized. I wasn't ready anyway. Next I met a singer songwriter and we wrote a song together, but she was into psychobilly/punk and that's not my style. Now, I'm actually in another all girl cover band and we're getting pretty tight. I still have so much to learn! My only regret is I didn't start sooner!
Describe Your Drum Kit:
I have a 30 yr. old Slingerland kit. It's black and silver and I love it. I have a Speed King Ludwig pedal, like John Bonham used. I have a good heavy ride and a Zildjian crash. I seriously need a new throne and a thinner head on my bass drum, but other than that it's all good.
Favorite Drummer(s):
Keith Moon, Bernard Purdie, John Bonham...
Favourite Bands/Musicians:
The Who, Steely Dan, The Dead, Bob Dylan, Heart, etc...(too many to list)

I just want to be able to hear myself better. (the bass drum, that is).
