What is your drumming history:
I am the author of RHYTHM: A Novel, a story that chronicles fifteen years in the life of funk drummer Jane Bowman. Here's a review from KIRKUS:

"At 15, Jane Bowman has yet to emotionally process the fiery death of her mother, a famed Latin-jazz percussionist who perished three years prior in the nightclub where she was performing. Jane lives in tony Sewickley Heights, Pa., with her novelist father Sam and two outspoken housekeepers ("Mary One and Mary Two") and forces herself to practice drumming, though the pastime reminds her too much of her beloved mother. At private school, Jane pals around with gay childhood friend Leo, but mostly keeps to herself, struggling with abandonment issues and weighty emotions always simmering just beneath the surface of her gruff, tomboyish exterior. Leo introduces her to Olivia Blue, a seasoned music teacher at a school for delinquent boys, hoping to stimulate Jane's love for music. Their meeting stimulates Olivia to recruit Jane as the newest lead drummer of her school's Allegheny Gatehouse Band, but it also ignites a romance between Olivia and Sam. After graduation, Jane heads to New York City, where her career as a percussionist blossoms with an eventful but short-lived stint with all-girl band Sisterhood of Soul, along with some heady sexual experimentation. The death of her grandparents creates a windfall of inherited wealth for Jane, but she manages to keep her bearings even in the midst of an opportunity to play with vulgar, cantankerous R&B star Bobby Angel. Love hits hard with a man from Jane's past and the development of her own group nicely buoys the melodramatic denouement. Goldsby's first novel (after her 2005 memoir Piano Girl), spans 15 years in the life of her gritty, resilient protagonist and is told with lyrical prose and deft characterization. Well-written, sympathetically earnest fiction." --Kirkus Discoveries

In real life, I'm a pianist. My dad is a drummer—he played on the Mister Rogers television program for 35 years. My son plays the drums, and my husband is the jazz bassist with the WDR Big Band. I've got a thing for drummers, which is one of the reasons I wrote this book!

Reviews of RHYTHM: A Novel

Rhythm conveys the magic of sound plus the transformative power of music,
and the words—like a well-played melody—ring true.”
Peter Erskine, drummer and author of Time Awareness for All Musicians

“Vivid and heart warming, Rhythm explores the joyous addiction musicians
have to their craft. Rhythm is a hit!”
John Riley, drummer

“Goldsby’s first novel (after her 2005 memoir Piano Girl), spans 15 years in
the life of her gritty, resilient protagonist and is told with lyrical prose and
deft characterization. Well-written, sympathetically earnest fiction.”
Kirkus Discoveries

“Goldsby, who marries the pathos of her plot line with the whimsy
and near-magical realism of her characters, deserves comparison
with John Irving, a modern master.”
Marion Winik, NPR commentator and author of First Comes Love

“Goldsby has a wicked sense of humor and a keen eye for the absurd.”
Publishers Weekly Starred Review

RHYTHM: A Novel Prologue and Chapter One

Hello to my new pals here at DrummerGirl. I hope you don't mind a pianist/author jumping onto this site, but it seems to me that you are the perfect audience for this quirky novel I've written, about, well, a girl drummer. Just to give you an idea of what I'm up to, I'm posting the prologue and first chapter of the book here.

Best wishes from Cologne, Germany!

Robin-I finished the book, and want to tell you how touched and inspired I was by it! Of particular interest to me, besides the wonderful relationship the characters had with one another, are the "behind the scenes" realities of a working musician. It also reminded me, countless times throughout the book, of the need for formal instruction and long, frequent, dedicated practice. The technical skills allow us to create even more elaborately and freely. It's inspired me to practice longer, although I don't take lessons at this time. It also reawakened my love of funk. I've just learned, as best I could, the "Funky Drummer" break, and have been studying videos of Clyde Stubblefield and Bernard Purdie. Thank you again for giving women like us on this site a sort of mirror to ourselves; there's very little mention of women drummers anywhere, even in today's more permissive climate.-Jessica G.

Robin-thanks for your response. I'm glad to see you're posting part of the book here. I can think of one person on this site, in particular, who'd be very interested, and if she hasn't looked at the site yet, I'll let her know so she'll take a look. I'm in a band that plays a wide variety of music, mostly music from the sixties to the nineties, with a little bit of blues,a smitten of jazz and some Latin-style rhythms. I really enjoy the variety. I don't take lessons, so the experience has been my music school. Thank you again for posting the book, and for writing it in the first place. You're right, how often is the protagonist a female drummer?-Jessica G.

Robin- I anxiously await the arrival of "Rhythm" in the mail; I ordered it several days ago. I was disappointed that none of the bookstores or libraries in my area had it. The blurb just grabbed me, and I think it would many others on this site. Welcome!-Jessica G.
