What is your drumming history:
I started playing drum set in 5th grade and played with various worship teams during that time. In high school I recieved further instruction on drum set, concert percussion and latin percussion. While in high school I gigged with local jazz bands, steel drum bands, latin jazz bands and many more. I also played for all the musicals at school and with all the choirs and in all the bands at school. I am now in college studying music performance. I gig around town playing for many local theater productions, bands, and I teach at a middle school. I've won various awards throughout my career at many jazz festivals and concert competitions. In college I participate in the Latin Jazz band, playing drums and percussion. I play vibes in the Jazz Big band. I am first chair/section leader in concert band and I participate in the percussion ensemble. I gig professionally in a steel drum duo group called "Panjammin" where I play lead pan. I Also play for a local annual variety show called "New Wrinkles" and this upcoming spring I will be playing for a local production of "RENT."
I am planning on moving to Long Beach to further persue my career in music and further my music education.

Nice to see a female jazz drummer. I only recently learned of Evelyn Glennie and she's actually going to be in my home town this September!
Great to meet you Katie.
p.s. I'm again taking lessons using the Moeller Method in Jazz and Funk. This is my introduction to Jazz so I'm quite... well, Jazzed!

Hey Katie! I am currently playing in my band Silver Phial here in L.A. I don't know any bands looking for drummers in Long Beach at the moment, but I wil certianly keep an ear open! I used to live in the LBC!! I lived in Belmont Heights in a couple different places! I miss living down there sometimes!! That cool ocean breeze is so wonderful!

Hi Katie! I've been tossing this question out to several drummers, and wondered if you could chime in with your thoughts. This is a strange question, but here it is: when you play with a metronome, is the goal to play in perfect unison such that the click actually disappears, and all you hear is your own playing. That's happened to me a bit, but I'm wondering if that's the goal drummers aspire to, or is that simply super human! My drum instructor is encouraging me to try for this, at least, that's how I understand it. I will ask him at my next lesson, but before this, I was wanting to get some feedback from other players about this. My playing experience is limited, and I've never used a metronome that much, let alone the way I used it today at my lesson! I've just started these lessons, in order to work on my technique; I've been playing a bit longer. It was quite a workout today. I really enjoyed it, but I don't want to make myself crazy shooting for something that most drummers don't even attempt! Any ideas or feedback would be helpful! Thanks!-Jessica G.

Katie-thanks for answering the question. It was funny, because as my instructor was playing along with me, and by himself, even he was not completely in unison, so I won't make myself crazy about it, I'll just see it as an ultimate goal to reach as I practice more and more. Thanks again.-Jessica G.

Katie, I heard you just acquired a Yamaha double kick drum pedal. So you're starting to learn to double kick. What made you decide to double kick? Katie, you're not alone. I just acquired a DW5000 Double kick drum pedal and I'm just starting to learn to double kick (I will still retain the DW5000 single kick drum pedal). You have to remember Katie, practice it slow before you get the full footwork technique of the double kick. So as newbies on double kick we can learn more with our footwork technique. You and I are looking forward to the double kick challenge.
