Really great job on this one, Jessica. Love the song and love the way you lay the groove. This one would get them up and dancing. Do you play it with your band, too? Nice playing!

How long have you been drumming?
just under two years
What is your drumming history:
I first picked up the sticks in February of 2007, but don't feel like I really played until November of 2008 when I met up with the guys who would become Runaway Blues & Classics Band with me. They are awesome musicians. However, they were all much more experienced than me. We got to play out at half a dozen gigs but they were in need of a more experienced drummer so I got the axe. I am hoping to regroup, practice, rebuild my confidence and find a new band (8/23/09)
10/14/09 Have the start of a new band - lots of new songs and practice - love it!
Describe Your Drum Kit:
Mapex M series in gray/blue 22" kick, 16" floor tom, 13" and 12" mounted toms, a cherry red 14" x 6.5" snare and Sabian cymbals

And a practice kit - Silvertone - that actually sounds pretty decent as long as I bring my cymbals from the other kit.
Favorite Drummer(s):
John Bonham, Simon Kirke, Greg Henderson (Martina McBride's drummer because I actually had one lesson with him), more drummers every day, Jason Bittner
Favourite Bands/Musicians:
Eric Clapton, Boz Scaggs, Bad Company, Aaron Neville, Queen, Heart, Nickelback, Maroon Five, Gnarls Barkley

Gig survey

Since my band is just starting to play out, I thought I'd get some feedback on how many songs make up the usual gig. Obviously, there are all sorts of places to play out - festivals, bars, parties, "on the patio" at stores. For those of you in bands, how long do you usually play in a set? 30 minutes? 45 minutes? How often and how long do you take a break? How many songs do you usually play for a gig and do you ever repeat some from earlier in the night? How many songs would you say your band has… Continue

Got shuffle? Help me, please

I've been trying to get the hang of the shuffle in my recent drum lesson and my instructor was very helpful and I thought, "ok. I got it." But when I went home and tried to apply it to the song I was playing, I don't "got it". I ended up having to go to quarter notes and let the bass player inject the shuffle sound. Any tips any of you have would be great, including some possible songs to start working with that I can try those tips out on. Old or new music, I don't care. I just really love the… Continue

Another You Tube posting

Check out You Tube and look for Runaway Blues & Classics Band - we now have 2 postings. I'm very thrilled with the talented folks in my band and wanted to share with all of you. My drumming is still a little basic - this is the first band I've ever played with (practically the first people I've ever played with) and although I can hear all my mistakes, I feel like I'm improving. We went to a local recording studio to get the Runaway take - can't beat it for $10 apiece for 4 hours - you can s… Continue

check my band out on you tube

Our lead guitar posted one of our recordings from last week on you tube. No px of the band, but I think these guys sound awesome. Nothing fancy at all on the drums, I just kept the beat but it really shows off Johnny's lead. I'm a little biased, but I think the guys in my band are really talented. We're blues and classics. I don't know how to attach the web details, but if you go to you tube and look for "Sleepwalk" by the band Runaway, that's us. He downloaded a nice picture show, too. Hope you… Continue

Hi Cindi, Good to hear from you. Haven't had much computer time (been helpin my husband haul grain) Farming is done for this year (Yeah!!) Always make my lessons though, (I do have my priorities lol). Dustin has given me some exercises to do, gave me several. Probably not much too them for a more experienced drummer but they've been a little challenge for me. I alternate on the snare R L then hit the floor tom R then L R snare then around to the 1st tom then 2nd tom then 1st tom then floor tom, you get the idea. You may have learned that a milllion years ago, but I'm pickin up speed the more I do i t. He gave me something else to learn and I worked at it all week and went back and said "do you make this stuff up to torment me?" It was 16th notes on the high hat with 2 and 4 hits on the snare then hittin the base on the a of 2 then the e and the and of 3, so its 3 pretty quick hits on the base. I have struggled with that but keep trying to do it. I know he just makes this up to drive me nuts, its workin Ha. Going to a drum clinic in Champaign, Ill. in a couple of weeks, a drummer by the name of Akira Jimbo is going to be there. Never been to one but saw this guys video and he looks amazing and very interesting. Not sure if I'll learn anything to help me at the stage I'm at but think it will be fun to see. I guess I'm not workin on anything too earth shattering but its been challenging for me and with the hectic life lately its enough. Hows' the band goin? Haven't been able to read many emails so I'm kinda clueless as to what everyone is up too. Let me know whats goin on with ya! Annette

Hi Cindi, Thanks for the nice comment on my video, I've enjoyed watching your videos too, it must be lots of fun playing in a band. Sorry to hear your last band let you go, good luck with getting the new band going! Take care, Tracy

Cindi,
Thanks for watching my vids. I posted these so everyone would get a laugh. I know I had a lot of fun making them!
I think sometimes, especially being new to drums, we take it too serious and are a bit hard on ourselves. It's great to really nail a song, but it's even better to just have fun playing and that's what I did this weekend and as you can see the result was halarious and GOD did I feel great afterwards!! LOL

Take care
and Happy Drummin!

Hi Cindi-sorry about that Transkriber-it did sound like a great idea. Given some of the complexity of the drum parts to the songs you're doing, maybe relying on the music heavily isn't a bad way to go. Once you're comfortable with how it goes, you can just put in what you need without having to go beat by beat with it. Having a singer sing the song does help you point out the changes in the music, so hopefully that will come through. I'm not sure if Dan will be playing his songs at the next open mic. We'll have to see. At least it gives us all more time to be ready. Have a great week. Take Care!-Jessica G.

Hi Cindi, long time no write. Yes, I’m still playing, added some hand drums, and still play the cocktail drum, (I haven’t played the regular set for a while). I’m sorry to hear your other band dumped you, but hey…sometimes changes are for good ;) Thanks for keeping I touch.

Keep drumming,
Ana

Hi Cindi-loved what you said about the music, and how John was able to create and move you so very much! Since your new guitar guys probably don't have his level of experience, maybe it's too soon to know whether they do or don't have it in them to move the audience. I know how you feel about just wanting to be there when it happens. I think that's what most musicians go for, and even if it seem unattainable, it's okay, the trip was just as good. I don't know, I don't have the experience to know if that's true, but that's what it seems anyway. Glad to hear the enthusiasm is coming back. As I wrote recently to Annette, I don't practice per se, but I just play. The way I practice is learning new stuff, stuff that has nothing to do with the band. The other night, I was really trying that half-time shuffle that was so popular in the song "Rosanna" by Toto. It looked fairly basic and had a great groove, but the coordination required is beyond me! I got part of it, but not all, and it would be a while before I could truly get it, if at all. I don't really care at this point that I don't practice. I refuse to chide myself for it. As for Dan, I hear what you're saying, because that's how I felt with my band at the very beginning, when it was sort of expected, politely, that I copy the original drum versions. However, I wouldn't appreciate someone who gives off the vibe that he just doesn't want you to play with him, and though he's too polite to say so, he makes it clear that you are just not on his level. He should be very happy that he plays out at all. He's good, but sorry, no one's that good to cop such an attitude. I'm not here to please him, I'm just here for my band, and to do what justice I can for the music. Nuff said. I guess my tolerance for certain things is almost nil these days. I don't have time for prima donna guitarists who live to slavishly copy renditions of their favorite songs. Sorry to sound mean. I don't know, but maybe comfort level is more important than genius. Genius, as I understand, can be a trial and a pain, and more often than not, in the mind of the beholder. I went through the same thing-wish I were a musical genius, but I often think that if I were, I still wouldn't feel complete with my drumming. There'd still be more to attain. Or, I'd feel jaded, and the joy of it would disappear. I think the so-called genius come about through hard work, and that they do, rather than have a magical talent, is almost a trade secret. Everyone wants to feel special. the more I've read about drumming , the more I come to realize the giants played from sun-up to sundown. The desire and deep, deep love is beyond all measure. I think that's where true genius lies. Sorry to go on so much-what else is new, right? Have a great day!-Jessica G.

Hey Cindi, I will give ya a few more details on the hit and run. By the way her name is Jasmine. We got her from a girl who got married and her husband did not like inside pets, I'd say see ya. My son was really wanting a dog and I told my husband about her and he said I'm leavin if you get a dog and I said see ya later. I knew he would cave and he is still here and he loves her too. The woman that hit her just lives down the road so I'm pretty sure she has drove by many a time and seen us outside with her in the yard, we live in the country on an acre. She was driving a fully loaded 10 wheel grain truck and hit her right in front of the house and said she was pretty sure she hit her so she should have stopped and walked up to the house and told me. I was actually outside the whole time but never heard anything. They haul a** by our house all the time so I was sure to tell her she needs to slow down and to tell her Mom the same. My husband said the grandma motors pretty good too when she is haulin so get out of her way too!! About impossible to get speed limit signs in the country, was able to get them to put Slow Children at Play signs up but don't think anyone pays any attention. Well I just hope when she has her surgery and he removes the femoral head that cracked off it will take alot of her pain away. She is a wonderful dog, my son showed her in 4-H obedience last year, so hope he will be able to continue with that. Back to drums!! At first we only had one set in our room, so Dustin would show me something then get up and I would sit, so that was kinda a pain so having two sets in there is alot better. Sometimes I still need to get up and actually stand by him and watch what he is doing, I think I'm more of a visual person or see it on paper is sometimes easier for me. He will play along with me and then sometimes he'll go nuts and start adding a bunch of stuff and I'll just stop and say "are you done now"? lol We laugh alot, I enjoy my lesson time. He cracks up because alot of the time i'll tell him to look out the window cause he makes me nervous watchin me. He told me the other day that he thinks he should just tell his students what to do and then walk out of the room. I guess I'm not the only one who can't seem to do anything when he is watching. I'll be practicing something and he says he stands outside the door and listens and as soon as he walks in I screw it up. I tell him maybe if he was ugly maybe I would do better Ha!! Better get goin, have to take roxanne to her dance class. She is in a ballet class with other girls with Down Syndrome and other disabilities, she loves it. Her teacher has been a dancer most her life and is a pediatric physical therapist so she knows the girls limits on some things. Have a great day, its cold here in Illinois today. Not ready for this weather. Sounds like your drummin is really coming along. Got me a metronome so gonna start gettin that beast out and workin with it. Talk to ya soon, Annette

HI Cindi!
Great hearing from you! Glad everything is going well with your band. It really sounds like it's coming together for you. I hear ya about singers, it's tough to get a good one without an ego. I was lucky when I was in a band(many moons ago!) we started out with my younger cousin as lead singer, she had a really great voice but not enough experience to have an ego yet! LOL None of us in the band took ourselves to seriously and I think that's why we all got along and had a great time. Unfortunantly our drummer had a heart attack and the band took a hiatus for awhile. During that time I had to move to another province for work so that was the end of me being in bands. Just never had the time for it.
I strated learning a couple of Beatles tunes a few weeks ago and now am totally addicted!I thought I would try some funk or learn some latin music but been having too much fun with the Beatles
I just got a new video editing software that I am playing with. My goal is to get a few relatives to do a colaboration. They live in different provinces so they would record themselves playing their instrument, me playing drums and I would edit it to be like a picture in picture sort of thing. I think it would be fun. If I get time this weekend I am going to try playing the guitar and drums and put something together, sort of a trial and error! LOl Being technically challenged this sould be a treat!
The cold weather has settled in here BLAH! But it will give me more time indoors and being "indoors" means that I will probally have more time to play and hopefully start learning some new genres of music (I like to challenge myself) or is it I like pulling my hair out??? Who knows! Who cares....I will just blame it on old age and senality! LOL

Well it certainly was good to hear from you. Looking forward to seeing some new vids in the future!

Take care and have fun drumming!

Lisa

Hi Cindi, Good to hear from ya, haven't been on line much lately and haven't got much drummin in. Almost 2 weeks ago I took our Yorkie outside, we live in the country so lots of room to run. Wasn't out about 15 minutes and I couldn't find her, decided to go out to the road and look about that time a neighbor (don't know her real well) was driving by with a huge grain truck. I flagged her down and asked if she saw a little dog and she said "I think I hit her" she pointed to the ditch right in front of our house and there she was lying in the ditch alive, her pelvis is busted up pretty bad. People will never surprise me at how cruel and thoughtless they can be. She knew she hit her but kept going. Went down to the field where her and her husband were farming and asked her how she could do that, decided I better leave before I punched her, I was so mad. Our dog Jasmine is in so much pain (is taking alot of pain meds but not helping much) so our house has been in an uproar, the dog cries alot during the night so not getting much sleep let alone drummin. She'll have some surgery soon, just trying to let one side heal and have surgery on the other, its been horrible. Feels Good to vent, sorry bout that probably not what you wanted to hear. Well lets talk about my lessons, I've discussed this with Jessica too. I'm kinda more of a person who likes things with structure and organization. Probably why its hard for me to learn a song and I think it has to sound just like the original, I'm trying to get over that! I sometimes wish I could see what other teachers teaching techniques are like compared to mine. I think my teacher also doesn't have specific things in mind until we sit down to drum. There are two electronic drum sets in the room and we face each other. They was something that is still hard for me to get used to is playing on my set at home then going to my lesson on the electronic set, I'm getting used to it except the hi-hat and I don't think I will ever get used to it, its just different. I'm like you I ask alot of questions and I ask him alot of questions about his band he's in. I ask him alot about drummin I hear in a song and I want to know what they are doing and how to do it. Been workin on Styx's Mr. Roboto, that songs got some weird sh*t in it but its been a fun song to work with. Was working on Phil Collins Easy Lover (haven't gave up but I've put it aside for now, a little too much going on in that song). Just this past Wed he is having me just do basic 8th notes on the hi-hat, with beats 2 and 4 on the snare but hitting the bass on different beats like on the 1 and the and of 3, trying to get out of the box so to speak. Probably sounds easy to alot of people but I'm still a beginner in my mind. He tells me he doesn't consider me a beginner anymore but I still consider myself one. My instructor has been playin since he was a kid (He is 25) but has only taught for maybe 2 years. My down fall is just not getting enough practice in, I just need to say heck with the housework and get on my drums. Would love to play with a band someday but at this rate probably won't happen. Oh well for now its just cheap therapy for me Ha!! Take Care and let me know how its goin with the other musicians, hope its going well. Did ya check out Tracy Grahams' Foo Fighters Video, she did a great job. Tracy lives about 1 and half hours away so we/ve gotten together a couple of times and had a good time trying to play each others drums, she played mine alot better then I played hers lol!!! Annette
