Hey! Do you play around LA a lot? I just moved to Long Beach and am trying to break into the music scene down here. I've played professionally throughout the central valley, but I'm starting at the bottom down here haha. Give me a shout sometime!

Hi Cheryl-unfortunately, I've never had the experience with a frame drum, but I have a conga and a set of bongos. I'm starting to feel a bit odd playing them, as silly as it sounds, because I don't know any authentic rhythms. I don't get much opportunity to play them in public; I play the kit in a band, and we have a percussionist who is very good on congas and bongos. A drum circle has formed in my area, so I might take part in it, using my instruments. Any chance to drum, especially with others, is okay with me. Take Care, and thanks for adding me as a friend.-Jessica G.
Hi Cheryl-I noticed that you teach frame drums. I've just started reading Layne Redmond's book, "When the Drummers Were Women". It's been a very interesting read so far. She seems to be one of the pioneer, in terms of pursuing and spreading the spirit of drumming to women. In the book, she mentioned that she was glad she hadn't any prior music experience before studying with Glen Velez, because she hadn't gotten stuck into the Western rhythms; she learned challenging odd meters early on. Did you find the transition from frame drum to kit easy, because of this? Take Care.-Jessica G.

What is your drumming history:
I began studying west african and afro-cuban rhythms when I left college. I then discovered the frame drum and studied with Layne Redmond as well as performed for 5 years with "Lipushiau", a women's frame drum ensemble. I began playing the drum kit only 3 years ago with the band "Layer" and now play and sing with my band "Silver Phial". I have also taught frame drumming to private students and in workshops.
