Still drumming? Just realized I haven't spoken to you in ages. It's been nuts in my world. Patching together a new band after I was dumped by my old one for a "freakin awesome" drummer.
Hi Ana! So glad to hear you're keeping your hand in the drumming thing, and that you're playing again! I'll do my best to say hi on the show. We have gigs one time each month. I have three CDs of material to work on, so it keeps me busy. Keep drumming with joy, and take care!-Jessica G.
Hi Ana! How are things going out there? What have you been practicing lately. I try to work on the band's songs, but I'm also doing sticking stuff. Take Care!-Jessica G.
Hi Ana-how are the rods working out with the rubber bands at the top? As long as the rubberband is tight, the rods still make that cool, popping sound, almost like sticks. Have you done any gigs lately? Hope all is well with you, and that you are keeping the drum beating. Take Care.-Jessica G.
Hi Ana-Thanks for getting back! We play mostly covers, and a few originals. It's a good idea to write down the basic beats, but I don't really think I know how to do that. I'm thinking of taping rehearsals, so I can listen back and really get a sense of how the drumming sounds. I try to lock in with the bass player, as far as what I'm playing on bass drum, but I guess I'm stubborn- I like to play "alongside" the bass, but not mirroring the bass pattern itself. I try to play with the whole song, if that makes any sense. I don't know if that's helpful to the song or not, but I'm going to try locking in next time. Thanks for your suggestions!-Jessica G.
Ana-I don't think there's a chat line on this site. I look forward to watching you guys. Is your gig going to be online? Lately, at the kit, I've been doing a sort of hodge-podge of things. Unfortunately, I'm not very organized, but most of it revolves around working on rudiments, fills and our band's songs. I work on rudiments to help build up my dexterity, but I've not been doing this every day. Lately, coming up with and practicing fills has been my focus. For example, I used a RLRLBass pattern around the kit, building up speed to where I do it pretty fast. Trouble is, I'm not always sure how or where to apply it. I've watched drummers do some of these types of fills, and always marvelled at how they did it. I'm nowhere near it, and I still don't totally get what's being played, but at least my speed is picking up a bit. Our band plays out once a month. At this stage, I find myself wanting to come up with new drum parts, ones that are sometimes different from the songs we cover. I was at rehearsal today, and to my frustration, felt like I was playing the same type of rhythm over and over. Not exactly alike, and I try to vary it in some small way, but my drumming was starting to be cookie-cutter, and I don't want that! I do realize, though, that the music will always dictate, and if you're playing pop, well, the songs will differ but the tempo and style won't. That's my new challenge, to make the songs sound and feel good. What sort of stuff do you work on. You play with a lot of feeling. That's what it's all about to me, technical skill aside. Sorry for going on so much. Take Care!-Jessica G.
