Drummergirl

I've been in two briefly (mgmt, prod. yada yada) nothing happenin' But if it didn't involve $$ or a chance to go big, would you prefer all ladies, or not. I won't go into my recent drama with a new all female band I just started, with but it seems to NOT be my cup of tea. Mainly due to the drama. I tend to get along better with a mixed band, or all guys. And of those mixed/guy bands/artists, I really had a better overall time, and felt I could be actual friends with them.

I've never been in a band,(although, i really want to!)
but i'd prefer a mixed/ all guys band because i generally get along with guys easier and i feel intimidated by girls (don't ask why... i have no idea) and girls can be a bit bitchy sometimes.... it'd make me feel very self concious.. heh
I love my all girl band. Just got lucky and found the right people. (the right chemistry)...I'm not a girls girl, either. But I'm learning I could be. We're in this together, ya know???

I've tried to make all-girl bands several times. The last time was a year ago, because I wanted to find other talented female musicians who wanted to make extreme music with me. But it, along with the earlier attempts to make all-girl bands, I found it either difficult to keep the group going, have enough commitment, find real dedication (not just girls wanting to 'be in a band'), there was often drama or just a lack of effective communication and too much 'beating around the bush' to put it lightly...so I never succeeded in putting something workable together.

So basically, I prefer to be the only female.

Also, I enjoy grabbing all the attention ;)

But seriously, I'm in a band right now with two girls (including myself) and four guys, so it's a workable mix.
I wish I could find girls out here that I could jam with... My first band was all chicks and I think we got a lot of respect. After drumming with dudes for a few years it was kind of cool to hear what people say to you after playing a set... but still not as cool as hearing what they say when your ALL chicks... at least in my opinion. We should stick together.
I've been in 2 bands since I started drumming and my experience was that mixed bands work out just fine.
I, personally, prefer male singers, so I'd never play in an all girls' band...
This seems to have been a good post and thanks to everyone that responded. I actually left the all female band a couple of weeks ago. I had had my main problems since the beg. with the singer, which I'm guessing isn't a surprise. I did grow to like her more over the past six months, but it seems we'd would continue to butt heads no matter how long I was with the band just due to "personality" differences, nothing really to do with music/drums. We had lost our lead guitarist, and it took a really long time to find a new one, then the other guitarist decided she didn't want to play bass anymore, just guitar, which is her preference, so then we were looking for a bassist too...
A couple of months ago a mgr contacted me to join an all female classic rock tribute band that had got rid of their drummer and lead guitarist. They had already done shows and wanted to keep the ball rolling for 2010.

The singer and the guitarist of this original band I was in really didn't like that I joined something else, and I said I couldn't afford to practice in both bands as much since i work/school. I felt it was a good time to leave to avoid future drama. Orignal bands may need more than once a week if there are new players. With covers its a bit easier for everyone to pratice at home more since the songs are usually well known.

So far I like the ladies in this band, and I hope that we'll get out there soon for paid shows. They just seem to have a vibe that I click with a bit easier. All the other quick gigs I do here and there I'm usually the only woman:) and seem to have more fun.
i am in a band. I really dont care as much....as long as we get along! my band is all ladies. But guys have a really good voice, too! I mean, a band should have fun together too! right? A band should get along. So as long as your having fun and doing what you love, it dosent matter!
so far..all guys and me... wouldnt mind trying to see what its like..if they are good..dosnt matter
I played in an all girl band for 2 years and it was really fun...then a boy joined the band and we all really loved it. He would do a lot of the booking and start off by saying, so we're a girl band" it was hilarious cuz we really ended up being the biggest girl in the band - we toured for 5+ years.

I'm in a new band now and we're a trio, girl rhythm section and boy guitarist, we all share lead vox and this combo works really well. We're super silly and we really love being a trio. The girls like having one other girl and one boy as band mates and the boy likes having girls as band mates so everyone's happy!

From my experience, the drama happens with boys and girls....we really try to check all the egos and drama at the door.
I like mixed bands. I mean
the girls bands are full of
drama!!
It seems from everyone's comments here that alot of us female drummers are prone to hanging out with guys more than girls, or we're all tomboys. Still, I could never work with girls. I have done before and we all had our periods sync together so you can imagine the bitchyness...so now I'm with a fourpiece band - 75% of which are men, and it works out just fine. Although - I am dating the guitarist, which is one thing girl bands wouldn't need to worry about.
Wow, to find enough females that play and would actually show up to play.... it's always been a dream of mine and continues to be so, but alas, has not yet happened. Sometimes there is one that shows up to jam, however it's few and far between. So, I end up usually with guys. Works out fine, although sometimes men can be bitchy, too.
