i start because i was unhappy and i needed something to give me power and self-esteem. I chose drums because one my classmate who play drums ask me (he was joking) if i want to bring lessons from him, and i take this thing seriously!! And then drums are considerate not so good for a girl, and i wanted to be different and particular from the other girls
I started playing about a year or so ago and the reason I wanted to play is beacuse I saw my step dad play and he told lots of stuff about the drums wich made me want to play drums to so he started giving me lessons and then I got my own set
I started playing drums in high school. I used to play guitar in a school rock band and after a while I started gravitating towards the drums. There was more gear to haul around as a drummer but it was definitely much more fun and way cooler!
Maybe it is because subconsciously I want to be different:) But mainly I started as it has been my desire to start playing since I was 12, but then I couldn't afford. It gives me somehow sense of satistaction and freedom, it's a great way to relax.
Now I earn some money on my own I can:) and now I'm saving up for my own set:)
same kind of deal for me with the differance, but i kinda started the drums due to some kind of rythmic "twitch" and a habit of drumming on the tables in class that got kinda annoying.
I've loved the drums since I was a toddler, but for different reasons, I didn't actually sit down at a kit and really get to play until I was a 27 year-old graduate student. I just loved the instrument, and every time I saw a drummer, they always looked like they were having the most fun! Once I decided to actually follow my instincts, I loved it so much that I even thought about putting grad school on hold to study drums.

I have been a bass player for many years but had always wanted to play drums. A former boyfriend was a drummer, too, and I always wanted to play. I finally decided to take the plunge at age 49 and am having a blast. Start young, ladies, you won't regret it!

i started because i was playing rythm guitr and we couldnt find the right drummer for our band. then i got a neurological disease and lost alot of feeling in my fingers. but by then i had gotten pretty decent. so now im stuck playing drums...and loving it!!!
I started to play about 4 years ago. I too wanted also to be a bit more different from the other girls, but it's more about music now. I just can't stop stop stop playing this incredible instument

I started yesterday, officially.
When I was in first grade, I remember going to see the music teacher with my dad. They asked what instrument I wanted to learn. And I remember saying I wanted to learn drums, but my step mom worked nights at the ER. The teacher was on my side, explaining that I could get a rubber practice pad that's not nearly as loud, but it was a no-go. I ended up with a portable Casio keyboard and eight years of piano lessons. However, that taught me music theory and how to count music, which I HATED at the time because, even with lessons, I play a lot by ear. When I was about 15, my dad got me a guitar, and after high school, a bass.
But in college. I decided I really wanted to learn the drums. Since I was broke, I built a kit out of boxes and the lid of a sauce pot, just so I could sort out the idea of drum theory. It sounds silly, but it worked.
Last week, I turned 30 and decided enough is enough. I hopped on eBay, found a used kit for a great price and the FedEx Guy dropped it off yesterday morning.
Also, I think it'll be a handy skill, because EVERYONE can play guitar, but it's always seems like a quest to find a decent drummer if you want to jam or start a Kelly Clarkson cover band or whatever.
Well my dad is a musician so it's definitely in the genes.
I was 3 years old when I started playing. I was rhythmic and liked to bang things. Cliché as it seems I would drag out pots from wherever I could find them, grab whatever I could to bang with and I would play along to whatever my parents had on.
I wasn't allowed to play drums in church until I was 9 years old because of the widely held belief at the time that girls don't play drums. I was told it was a mans instrument... it just made me want to play them more. Long story short I created a huge stir and the pastor's son at the time said 'hey if she wants to play let her play, I have some sticks for her.'
I started because I was bored and wanted something to do and when I thought about all the instruments, I wanted the one that looked like the most fun - drums. As soon as I thought drums, I also thought "you should've started years ago - you're too old" Fortunately, my next thought was "I ain't dead yet" I might be the oldest one on this site though as I'm in my 50's! I now jam with a bass player, rhythm guitar and lead guitar and we are firming up to be a blues band. (my husband's our roadie and recording guy) Fun guys, fun playing drums - should've done this decades ago. I'm never going to die. I have so much to learn!!! I also admit that the idea of it not being a "girls' instrument" appealed to me and I get a kick out of the thought of introducing myself by saying, "Yeah. I've got 13 grandchildren and I play the drums" My goal is to get really good so that I could sit in with any band (I do admit that I am light years from that goal, but improving every day). Is this not the coolest thing to be obsessed with??
I remember my first experience with drums. I was really young and at a wedding. The band let some of the kids play their instruments. All the boys went to the guitars, I went for drums. And the rest is history!
